Dr. Carroll F.S. Hardy Leadership Awards

History/Background About the Awards

Dr. Carroll F.S. Hardy

The Bryant Educational Leadership Group honors the legacy of Dr. Carroll F.S. Hardy, known to many as “Dean Hardy,” who was a longtime Student Affairs administrator. For over 15 years Dean Hardy worked tirelessly to increase the diversity of William & Mary’s student body through six summer enrichment programs for students in grades 8 to 12, by establishing the National Black Student Leadership Development Conference for college students, through the creation and nurture of 15 multicultural student organizations, and by founding the Hulon Willis Association, a W&M organization devoted to African-American alumni. She was known to be tough but nurturing, and she encouraged her students to go outside of their comfort zone. One former student said “To those who were doing well, Dean Hardy was quick with an encouraging word. For those who were struggling, Dean Hardy pushed, pulled, cajoled until a degree was in hand. She cared for all, and she was beloved by all.” By all measures, Dr. Hardy was a trailblazer. She was one of the most influential leaders for Black students, staff and faculty, leaving a legacy of profound impact. She truly made an imprint on everyone she encountered.

When these awards were created, our Leadership Team knew without a doubt, that we would have to honor the legacy of Dr. Hardy. It’s on her shoulders that we stand and are blessed to carry the torch she ignited within each of us years ago. These awards were created to recognize individuals who have a similar spirit and dedication to servant leadership.
